A wooden ox yoke with "2021" inscribed in the center.

Admired for its indispensable role in China’s agricultural society, the Year of the Ox is a celebration of its diligence, integrity, and honesty. We designed five red packets to honor the five grains in ancient China – wheat, broomcorn, rice, foxtail millet, and soybean. Wrapped in packaging that embodies the ox itself, the packets are tucked neatly into a blizzard book mechanism that serves as a carrier for all the stories within.

An obscure art form found only deep in the farms of China’s countryside, the Ge Ba is a rare and little-known part of Chinese culture. Silk, hemp, ramie, and cotton are assembled together with rice glue, creating a piece reminiscent of a Cubist painting. These collages were never appreciated at the imperial palace. And their existence is ephemeral—fabricated as quickly as they disappear. They are rarely kept and hardly known by others except the natives themselves.

A final layer of wrapping—a nod to the Ancient China’s grain packing

The packaging represents the ox itself, serving as a carrier of all the stories within. The envelopes tuck neatly into a blizzard book mechanism that showcases all the illustrations and vibrant colors of each packet.
