Cradled between Mount Yotei, the ski slopes of Niseko Annupuri, and a rare 680-metre stretch of untouched riverfront along the Shiribetsu, Kingfisher Trail occupies one of Hokkaido's most quietly extraordinary sites. We were challenged to translate the specific character of this place, and its seventeen individual plots, into a sales kit that any prospective resident could hold in their hands and immediately feel.

Weaving the symphony of the earth, we translated the landscape’s melodies into the master plan. Each element pays homage to the abundance, celebrating each homesite’s unique topography and character. This segmentation honours the land’s diversity, creating a community where each enclave tells its own story.

Our work was grounded in the animist worldview of the Ainu, the indigenous inhabitants of Hokkaido, who believe kamuy (spirits) reside throughout the natural world. Their relationship with nature is not one of ownership, but of reciprocity and humility. This became our philosophical anchor: every design decision would honour the land rather than impose upon it.

Riverside is a sanctuary of natural beauty and tranquil waterways nestled along the Shiribetsu River. Here, the river’s tranquil and clear water flow meets the vibrant landscape. It is a place of calm, where the river pathways and its banks offer peaceful walks through autumn’s colours.

The pattern draws its palette directly from the site: the deep blues of the Shiribetsu, the greens of Niseko's fields, the shifting hues of Hokkaido's sky. Overlapping wave forms depict both the river in motion and the clouds that gather and lift around Mount Yotei—the land's characteristic weather patterns. Across the book’s front and back, individual plot forms combine to reveal the full character of the land.

Farmside celebrates pastoral elegance and sustainable living, framed by verdant fields and views of Mount Yotei and the surrounding farmland. In this sanctuary of sustainable living, fertile fields and sweeping vistas open to gardens and farm-to-table experiences. It is a haven for those who find joy in the land’s seasonal flow.
